A Picture At Every Bus Stop
At the beginning of 2024, I began photographing at bus stops in the GRTC system. I set myself a goal of photographing at all ~1600 bus stops in order to challenge myself to make a lot of pictures of the city I’ve lived in for ten years.
Underlying this project is the belief that God made and upholds all things through His Word. That includes all the weird and out-of-order stuff. I believe that God speaks through His creation, and thus it is possible to make an interesting, unique image at every single bus stop. This is an area we would normally overlook- in our efficiency, we often seek out pristine nature and “post card views” of the city when considering the beauty of the city. Yet, beauty is also available in the mundane spaces as well if one cultivates a diligence to look.
This is not sentimental beauty, though. Man has been given the capacity and cultural mandate to develop the earth, and one way we have done this is through the creation of cities. Yet sin has marred this endeavor and produced every distortion from the ugly to the painful to the stupid. These photographs are meant to be interesting and beautiful. Yet, at any given stop, I do not turn my camera purposefully away from that which also might be out-of-order and crying out for redemption.
This series represents 30 of the roughly 1,200 (and counting!) images I’ve made at bus stops in the GRTC. Thank you for viewing, and thanks to Remnant Church for the opportunity to exhibit this work. To purchase prints, find more info below. The images at Remnant Church are listed below.
